What is whooping cough, and how is it treated?

Whooping cough is a very contagious respiratory tract infection caused by the bacteria Bordetella pertussis. Whooping cough starts out like a cold. A cough that may last up to six weeks or more is sometimes confused with asthma or bronchitis. Also known as pertussis, whooping cough tends to be most severe in infants and children. It sometimes leads to hospitalization or death.
